Day 36: Reading an ark(C?)

I'm not gonna lie, this is what I thought of the first time someone told me they were reading an ARC. A little messy, but that's what you get when I'm on vacay.

Day 34: Jungle Chicken Boogie

Inspired by Susan Kaye Quinn's post about reading to her kids, Jungle Chicken came to life at 5:45am yesterday morning. Jungle chicken...(to the tune of "Jungle Boogie")...jungle chicken...(my nieces and I were dancing to this all day yesterday.)

Day 33: Hiya, Biff!

So in 10th grade, we were reading Death of a Salesman and Jon Gandomi was playing the part of Happy Loman, who frequently greets his brother with "Hiya, Biff!" Jon apparently wasn't paying attention to the context of the sentence in the first reading and ended up saying "Hi-YA, Biff!" (as in karate chop hi-ya, not friendly greeting) Therefore, every time any of the characters said "Hiya!" (which, in Death of a Salesman, is a LOT) everyone would yell it like a karate war-cry, making the death of this particular salesman gruesome and brutal. It was awesome. Mr. McLellan the teacher was not (outwardly) amused. (But most likely inwardly cause he was a pretty cool teacher.)

That said...wait, where was I going with this?

Day 32: Fishing with autofriends

The fish recognized their master and quickly began to give up.

Day 31: O HAI

Quick tablet sketch. My binary is pretty rusty, though.

Day 30: Anna's Book Trailer

I recently did some art for Anna Staniszewski's upcoming book trailer. I thought that could count for a day of sketching, right? Enjoy!

Day 29: How baby mermaids are made

Still on a mermaid kick. I always though it'd be cool if mermaids were predatory, like vampires or gym membership salesmen.

Day 28: Mudmaid

Can't sleep. Mermaids will eat my toes.

Day 27: Runs on hay, steam and love

There you go. Now you can add as many legs as you want (with the proper tools, of course.)

Monday, June 20, 2011

Day 26: Mondays are for Unicorns

I already drew two legs, what more do you want?

Day 25: A pleasant burn

Dear friend Kylee asked for a Radiant Firehawk...well, this is what she gets. Love it or extinguish it with baking soda, here it is.

(I admit I sketched this a day ago, not today. But!! I still sketched something today that I'll put up tomorrow! I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN MY ART TO YOU, WARREN)

Day 24: They said

My caption: "They said they'd open up a portal and share everything they knew with us. We agreed and opened and waited and watched helplessly as they took it all instead."

Preston's caption: "Public school."

Day 23: Treadheads Unite

Someone mentioned a few weeks ago that Treadheads (people that use a treadmill desk for writing/work) needed a logo. Ironically, I sat down to draw this.

Day 22: Ai Ling

AI Ling from Cindy Pon's SILVER PHOENIX series. READ THIS BOOK.

UPDATE: Aw, the sweet Cindy Pon posted this on her blog! Thanks, Cindy!

Day 21: A million tiny sunstrokes

I love drawing hair because all I really want is nice long hair. It's like "The Secret" for artists with short hair (SFAWSH).

Day 20: Skeleton you are my friend

.
This is my weekly post over at my group art blog, ANTHDRAWLOGY. It's rare company over there, people. Amazing artists abound! Dead butterfly says to check them out. DON'T QUESTION DEAD BUTTERFLY.

(I'm allowed to double up...right??)

Day 19: Me-dude-sa

I know I said no more birds, but allow me just one more tiny flock of seagulls, please.

Day 18: Shhhh.

Preston and I were listening to comedian Mike Birbiglia yesterday and he mentioned (among other things like bear attacks on his sister or his jackal-filled sleep disorder) that he gets Google Alerts for his name. So hi, Mike! Your show is rad. Sleep well.

P.S. If you haven't had a chance to hear any bits of Birbiglia, you can catch his show on Netflix streaming (I think it's still there) or just go buy his album on iTunes. SO WORTH IT. The guy is an AMAZING (not to mention hilarious) storyteller. Not pudgy or awkward at ALL.

Day 17: Misheard lyrics take one

It's like JAMES sings: "This head is on fire / with passion and love"

...wait, it's BED is on fire?

Well, now I don't know what to draw.

Day 16: I be drowning

Sometimes there's just too much stuff to do. I CAN'T EVEN BE BOTHERED TO ERASE MY PENCIL LINES.

Thursday, June 9, 2011

Day 15: All my profiles are mildly suspicious

Guys, I'm realizing that a lot of my sketches are looking over their shoulder. I guess you would too if you knew what was on the other end of this pencil. I can END you, beanie girl.

I didn't mean that, I'm sorry. Please stop scowling.

Day 14: It started out as a magician

When I get home, I will stop drawing birds.
(this is not a promise)

Day 13: I didn't say I was GOOD at the iPad

Bluuuuuuuuuue hair. Even on the iPad I draw bluuuuuuuuuuue hair.

Day 12: Shoulder fins are in

Another day without a scanner. Let's pretend the smudges on the left are artistic and not a weird shadow from taking this picture with my phone.

Sunday, June 5, 2011

Day 11: Some iPad sketches

Still no scanner. Have to improvise and actually learn how to use the SketchBook app on the iPad. I'm proud I spent this much time on the thing without switching over to Angry Birds. But now? Sketch posted! FREEDOM! Happy Sunday!

OH MY GOSH WHY AM I STILL TALKING ABOUT BIRDS

Day 10: Just another day for Nanako

I'm traveling and don't have access to a scanner right now. Luckily, my phone doesn't take completely awful pictures! (I mean they're awful but not COMPLETELY so.) Away from home and still right on schedule. Eat it, procrastination!

Friday, June 3, 2011

Day 9: Put another bird on it

PUT ANOTHER BIRD ON IT. NEVER STOP PUTTING BIRDS ON THINGS

Day 8: Put a bird on it.

This girl is nice. Let's put a bird on her.
(P.S. Pardon the poor quality. I should really fix my scanner. Maybe I should put a bird on it.)

Day 7: Princess in the Peat (and muddy floors)

I've been working on a full length dummy for my "Illustrating Books for Children" class all week. This is just one of the pages...imagine! There are 31 more like it!! (Well, not exactly like it. That would be a very boring book. Or a really avant garde one...well, crap. Now I can't decide.)

Hope to post the whole thing in the next few days! I can almost hear you baiting your breath... (gross)

Day 6: One Hundred Dresses (okay just one)

Why yes, I have been watching Firefly today. And I have been drooling over Inara. And I have been considering taking up sewing again, just to make her dress in "Shindig". Why do you ask? (Wait...did you ask?)
