Day 90: Galadrielish

She started off as Galadriel then I forgot the elven ears and the hair turned blue, so...

Funny story about blue hair! The first art student I tutored was 10 years old. I was showing her a few of my sketches and she asked, "Why does everyone have blue hair?" And I said, "Well, I think brown hair is pretty boring. I mean, you see it around every day. It's fun to see something different, right?" And she flipped through the gobs of blue haired people in my sketchbook and replied, "Well, if everyone you draw has it, it's not that different, is it?"

Well said, overly-perceptive-for-her-age 10-year-old. Well said.

Day 59: Sunday Selfie: Snoozes and Snippets...

Good night, crazy kids. Good night, long day. Good night, no inspiration. Good night, no time. Sorry for the quick sketch. A nap should do us all well.

Day 55: Quite Interesting...

I went into this with a good intention of drawing Stephen Fry. And you know what they say about good intentions...

Oh well. Onward and upward!

Day 52: My kid, John McClane

I'm not terribly pleased with how this turned out, but at least it's evidence of me trying something new...if not exactly new, then something with which I'm pretty uncomfortable (pure digital, no hand drawn components). I've also learned that my kid looks somewhat like Bruce Willis.

Day 47: The Smolder

I thought of doing Flynn Rider today but then I saw a very cool picture of a Sikh fellow and thought "Hmm, how does one draw a turban?" So. Little of both, maybe.

Day 19: Lemon out!

Had a nutty hard time deciding on someone to do, so I reverted to an old favorite (although the costume might not be as fun as Korra or whatnot): Tina Fey as Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. There it is. Moving on, Lemon out!

Heads heads heads!

Sketching a blue streak of heads lately, maybe just to justify my need to draw lots and lots of hair. What can I say, I lean to the hirsute.

Don't take off the helmet!

My first foray with a (single color) watercolor pencil. It scanned a little dark on one side, but I kinda liked it that way. This is ground control to Major Thomasina...

Light Urple Princess Redux

Trying out a new technique and using a familiar pose. I think I want this haircut now.

Friendship is Maaaaagic

Savin was pretty sick today so we watched a lot of TV, specifically her favorite show of the moment. I dare ANYONE to view hours of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and not imagine the main characters as real people. And if you can actually guess the characters, you've also watched too much MLP:FiM for the day. I should go balance this out with some Mindy Project or something.

Leeeeiaaah

Playing with pencils on the computer...do do dooo.

Headshots!

This is one of eight or so headshot illustrations I've been commissioned to do over the last year. It's been really fun and a bit of a challenge not to let my inner cartoonist take over. Yes! It's true! None of these came out with fairy wings! I'm so dang MATURE, yo.

Sketchy sketchy in painter. Sketch!

Day 361: Feeling a little blue

All digital! I used a new (new to me, at least) technique on this one and wasn't too disappointed with the result. As always though, portraits like this are just an excuse to draw hair.

End boring story. How you doing today?

Day 351: Wiggle hair

A few years ago I was in a really bad biking accident that I don't remember much of. When I did get out of the hospital, they told me that all I had, besides bumps and cuts and bruises, was a concussion. Yay! However, when I picked up a sketchbook soon afterwards, I realized that I could. not. draw. It was the weirdest thing but I seriously could not draw a single thing that looked like what it was supposed to be. Freaked me out for a few days. After a week or two, things were back to normal and I made a speedy recovery (I think). However, I remember and cringe at that Algernonian feeling of once doing something very well, then suddenly not being able to do it at all.

There's a point to this, I swear. This is the fifth drawing I've made today; the rest have been horrifically bad. Savin draws better than me today. I think I accidentally got a concussion somewhere between playgroup and dinner.

More fun on the whiteboard! Here is a giant head.
