Day 365: WOOHOO!

Anyone want to know what 365 days of drawing looks like?

Okay, that's not counting the purely digital ones and the bigger paintings and the few that I sold (woot!!)...but it's a rough estimate! I MADE IT, GUYS! Despite the few weeks that I took off due to sickness, vacation or moving the 365 days of drawing experiment has wrapped up in a timely fashion. Woohoo! (Also, I know what you're thinking: "Marie, why didn't you just keep all your drawings in a sketchbook?" Me: "Because I've been wanting to take this picture for 364 DAYS. Also scanning out of a book is hard.")

A few thoughts, if you'll indulge me a little self-reflection:

From day 1 to day 365, it was difficult to see any improvement in my skill. I think that goes for anyone trying to improve something on a daily basis; it's hard to see the change from point A to point B if you're so close to it the entire way. There were some days I really tried to stretch myself and some days I got really lazy. And heck, some days I was just lucky I got anything down despite the generous quantities of snorkjuice I had before sitting down to draw.

But I think that if I didn't improve significantly in my raw skill, I definitely learned how to STICK with it and to force myself to draw without sitting around for days and waiting for inspiration or getting distracted by--ooh, hey look a new episode of So You Think You Can Dance! Be right back. (I swear I've learned something.)

Most of all, I'm so incredibly grateful for the support of everyone that came to visit the blog, whether you left a comment or not. You guys don't know how much I appreciate it...SERIOUSLY. Anyone that has indulged in anything creative knows that it's a communal project more than anything and I thank you guys for your encouragement, suggestions, and opportunities to try thing I never would have before, such as planes, battlecorns, an Aang-glider, planes, lion-guns, koi fish and Avengers fan art even BEFORE I saw Avengers. And planes. Okay, maybe just one.

Special shout out to my awesome group art blog over at Anthdrawlogy! We collectively came up with some crazy fun topics that, again, stretched the old sharpie to do things it never dared do before. I seriously love those guys and in lieu of any regular updates here, you should check us out there every week.

And although I won't be posting EVERY day, I will be updating regularly here and picking up the three month old slack over at my other, slightly more writing centric blog.

Anyways, thanks for the fun ride, guys. After a handful of Star Wars/Ready Player One/Avatar fanart, an armful of mythical creatures and, naturally, a million unicorns, the end has come a bit too soon. Lots of love, quibbly friends. Let's celebrate! Sharpie cake and watercolor ice cream for everyone!

Wooo!!

Day 362: Fallflies

I am in a VERY girly mood. I might just go put on lipstick for fun.

Day 361: Feeling a little blue

All digital! I used a new (new to me, at least) technique on this one and wasn't too disappointed with the result. As always though, portraits like this are just an excuse to draw hair.

End boring story. How you doing today?

Day 358: Oops.

Okay, we're gonna need a hanger, some duct tape and some gum.
Preferably chewed.
Hurry! Before the turtles get it first!

Day 356: A snorkjuicy collaboration

Savin was practicing her watercolors today and when she was finished, I asked if I could trace over the shapes with a pen. She, of course, said "popsicle!"

Looks like she's starting on the snorkjuice early.

Day 354: A hairy situation indeed

Today's quibble was a little too long to scan. Oh look! I need to fold laundry.

Day 353: The Cydonians (crosspost from Anthdrawlogy)

So I was reading a bit about the "Face on Mars" phenomenon...basically, a mile wide rock formation that looks like a face, almost suspiciously so. I think it was formed by these guys and boy howdy, you shoulda seen the body they had planned. But then there was the Great War of 3194 where Cydonia and the Arandas Crater people tried their level best to wipe one another out and...you know what? I'll just let NASA cover it all when the Curiosity gets back.

Anthdrawlogy does Mars!

Day 351: Wiggle hair

A few years ago I was in a really bad biking accident that I don't remember much of. When I did get out of the hospital, they told me that all I had, besides bumps and cuts and bruises, was a concussion. Yay! However, when I picked up a sketchbook soon afterwards, I realized that I could. not. draw. It was the weirdest thing but I seriously could not draw a single thing that looked like what it was supposed to be. Freaked me out for a few days. After a week or two, things were back to normal and I made a speedy recovery (I think). However, I remember and cringe at that Algernonian feeling of once doing something very well, then suddenly not being able to do it at all.

There's a point to this, I swear. This is the fifth drawing I've made today; the rest have been horrifically bad. Savin draws better than me today. I think I accidentally got a concussion somewhere between playgroup and dinner.

Day 350: Kermie and Piggy (crosspost from Anthdrawlogy)

I wanted to color this a little better but I ran out of time/guts.

Check out everyone else's Muppets at Anthdrawlogy!

Day 347: The hooves make it hard to sneak around

While being treated in the burn unit a few minutes later, Sergeant Sharphorn and Commander Confrontational both claimed to have never even heard the phrase "Never wake a sleeping dragon."

Lieutenant Tatakau could not be found for questioning.

Day 346: The Belcher kids

Bob's Burgers is probably one of the funniest shows I've ever seen in my life. Thus, I am proud to be drawing blatant fanart at this time.

Seriously. THE FUNNIEST.
